UPI Now Live in 11 Countries: A Decade of Growth, Innovation, and Global Expansion of India's Real-Time Payment System
Overview
The Press Information Bureau (PIB), under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, released a detailed backgrounder on August 24, 2026, titled "UPI: Transforming India's Payment Landscape", documenting the remarkable journey of the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) — from its modest pilot beginnings in 2016 to becoming a globally recognized real-time payments infrastructure. Developed and managed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), UPI has grown into a foundational pillar of India's Digital Public Infrastructure, now operational across 11 countries for UPI acceptance and/or cross-border remittances.
What is UPI and Why Does It Matter?
UPI is an interoperable, real-time payment system that enables multiple bank accounts to be accessed through a single mobile application of any participating bank or payment service provider. Its architecture integrates a wide range of banking services — from peer-to-peer fund transfers to merchant payments — on one unified platform.
Core Features of UPI
- Round-the-clock availability — digital payments are enabled at any hour, on any day
- Two-factor authentication coupled with end-to-end encryption to ensure transaction security
- Interoperability across banks and payment service providers
- Single-platform access to multiple banking services, fund transfers, and merchant transactions
- A system designed to be accessible to every segment of Indian society, including those with limited financial literacy or technology exposure
These characteristics collectively positioned UPI as not merely a payment tool but as a transformative public utility.
Milestone-by-Milestone Evolution of UPI
2016: The Foundation Year
UPI was launched on a pilot basis in April 2016 with 21 member banks. The public rollout followed in August 2016, when participating banks made their UPI-enabled mobile applications available on the Google Play Store. The year concluded with the launch of the BHIM application in December 2016, enabling direct bank-to-bank transactions via mobile devices.
2017: Merchant Enablement Through Dynamic QR
The introduction of Dynamic QR created a retail merchant platform enabling UPI payments via dynamically generated QR codes. Unlike static codes, dynamic QR codes embedded transaction-specific information such as payee details and exact amounts, thereby removing the need for manual amount entry and reducing the scope for transactional errors.
2018: UPI 2.0 — Enhanced Capabilities
UPI 2.0 was rolled out with a suite of advanced features:
- Invoice in the Inbox — allows the assessee or user to review bills or invoices prior to authorizing any payment
- Signed Intent and QR — simplified payment authorization while maintaining security standards
- UPI Mandates — enabled recurring payments through pre-authorized standing instructions
- Overdraft Account Linking — allowed users to execute UPI transactions directly from their overdraft accounts
