SEBI Mandates FIRE Framework Integration for Cyber Incident Reporting by Regulated Entities
The digital transformation of the Indian financial ecosystem has brought unprecedented efficiency to the securities market, but it has simultaneously introduced complex technological vulnerabilities. As cyber threats become increasingly sophisticated, regulatory bodies are compelled to upgrade their defensive and reporting mechanisms. In a definitive move to fortify the market's digital infrastructure, the market regulator issued Circular No. H0/(449)2026-1TD-5_DIV1/1/19448/2026 on 24 August 2026. This directive fundamentally restructures how market participants communicate digital security breaches by aligning the official reporting portal with globally recognized standards.
The Shift to Global Reporting Standards
Historically, reporting digital breaches involved fragmented communication that often lacked uniformity across different jurisdictions and sectors. To eliminate these inconsistencies, the regulatory authority has officially integrated its digital infrastructure with the Format for Incident Reporting Exchange (FIRE).
Conceptualized and developed by the Financial Stability Board (FSB), the FIRE framework serves as a universal language for documenting and sharing information regarding digital security breaches. By adopting this internationally acclaimed model, the regulatory body ensures that the data collected from domestic market participants is structured, uniform, and easily analyzable.
