IRDAI Enforces Strict Anti-Dark Pattern Regulations for Digital Insurance Platforms

Digital consumer protection has taken a front seat in India's financial regulatory landscape. In a decisive move to shield online buyers from manipulative digital architectures, the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) has issued a strict mandate for all digital insurance providers. Through a formal press release dated April 2, 2026, the regulatory body has ordered all regulated entities operating electronic platforms to entirely eliminate deceptive user interface (UI) designs.

To achieve this, insurers must strictly adopt and implement the Guidelines on Prevention and Regulation of Dark Patterns, ensuring that digital portals remain transparent, ethical, and free from coercive digital tactics.
