FSSAI Expands Network of Recognized Food Testing Laboratories with January 2026 Amendment

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India has recently revised its roster of accredited food testing facilities through an official notification released on 28 January 2026. This administrative update modifies the original 2016 gazette concerning laboratory recognition under Section 43(1) of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. The revision encompasses multiple geographical zones across India, introducing fresh laboratory additions while simultaneously removing specific existing entries from the accredited list.

Overview of the Regulatory Amendment

This regulatory modification represents a systematic effort to maintain current standards in food safety testing infrastructure throughout the nation. The amendment specifically targets three major geographical divisions: the Western, Southern, and Eastern regions of India. By incorporating newly accredited facilities and delisting certain laboratories, the regulatory authority ensures that the national network of testing facilities remains aligned with contemporary operational capabilities and compliance standards.

The notification bears the reference number F. No. QA-12012/8/2021-QA-FSSAI and exercises authority derived from Sub-section (1) of Section 43 of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 (34 of 2006). The amendment modifies the original notification S.O. number 3648 (E), which was initially published in the Gazette of India, Extraordinary, Part-II, Section 3, Sub-section (ii), on 6th December, 2016.
