DGFT Mandates Restricted Import Policy for Platinum Articles

The regulatory landscape regarding the importation of precious metals has undergone a significant revision. The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), operating under the Ministry of Commerce & Industry, has formally altered the import status of specific platinum items. Through the issuance of Notification No. 58/2025-26, dated 05 February 2026, the Central Government has transitioned the import policy for platinum articles from a "Free" regime to a "Restricted" category.

This amendment specifically targets ITC (HS) Code 71141920, which falls under Chapter 71 of ITC (HS) 2022. This move indicates a tightening of control over precious metal inflows, requiring importers to adhere to stricter compliance protocols unless specific exemptions are met.

The modification has been enacted in exercise of the powers conferred by Section 3 and Section 5 of the Foreign Trade (Development & Regulation) Act, 1992. Furthermore, this action aligns with the provisions stipulated in Paragraph 1.02 and 2.01 of the Foreign Trade Policy, 2023.
