Revised Customs Tariff Values for Gold, Silver, Edible Oils, and Brass Scrap Effective 16th April 2026

Overview of the Notification

The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs, exercising powers granted under Section 14(2) of the Customs Act, 1962, has issued Notification No. 37/2026-Customs (N.T.) dated 15th April 2026, bringing into effect a fresh revision of tariff values for a range of imported commodities. This amendment modifies the long-standing Notification No. 36/2001-Customs (N.T.) dated 3rd August 2001, which serves as the foundational framework for customs tariff valuation in India.

The revised tariff values are operative with effect from 16th April 2026 and encompass three distinct tables covering edible oils, precious metals, and areca nuts — goods that are frequently traded in high volumes and are sensitive to international market fluctuations.

Important Note: Tariff values fixed under Section 14(2) of the Customs Act, 1962 act as the base for computing customs duty, ensuring standardised and consistent valuation across all ports of entry, irrespective of the declared transaction value.

The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs derives its authority to fix and revise tariff values from sub-section (2) of Section 14 of the Customs Act, 1962 (52 of 1962). These values are prescribed to prevent under-invoicing and ensure that customs duties are levied on a fair and uniform value benchmark rather than solely on potentially manipulated declared prices.

The principal notification — Notification No. 36/2001-Customs (N.T.) — was originally published in the Gazette of India, Extraordinary, Part-II, Section-3, Sub-section (ii), vide number S.O. 748 (E), dated 3rd August 2001. Its most recent amendment prior to this notification was made vide Notification No. 35/2026-Customs (N.T.), dated 2nd April 2026, published vide number S.O. 1733 (E), dated 2nd April 2026.

The current notification substitutes TABLE-1, TABLE-2, and TABLE-3 in their entirety with revised values reflecting updated international market conditions.
