HDFC BSE Sensex Index Fund: Reading Dated Scheme Data, Expenses and Capital Gains Tax for Tax Year 2026-27

This article sets out what can be verified about HDFC BSE Sensex Index Fund as of October 2026, how its asset size, expense ratio and tracking error should be read, and how redemptions are taxed for Tax Year 2026-27.

Advisers are regularly asked to compare passive schemes using figures from different dates and different pages. Mixing dates gives misleading conclusions, and capital gains need to be computed lot by lot. The article does not predict returns, recommend any transaction or discuss individual stock weights.

1. What is the scheme and what governs it?

HDFC BSE Sensex Index Fund is an open-ended passive equity index fund of HDFC Mutual Fund, managed by HDFC Asset Management Company Limited. It was launched on 17 July 2002. Its tier-I benchmark is the BSE SENSEX Total Returns Index (TRI). The objective is to replicate the index, subject to tracking error; tracking is not assured.

The scheme is governed by the Scheme Information Document (SID) and Key Information Memorandum (KIM), the base SID being dated 21 November 2025, together with later addenda, monthly portfolio disclosures and the SEBI (Mutual Funds) Regulations, 2026. Those Regulations took effect on 1 April 2026, with an amended version dated 7 July 2026, and the SEBI Master Circular for Mutual Funds dated 20 March 2026 is also relevant. SEBI registration does not insure capital or endorse performance, and no deposit insurance applies. The riskometer rating is Very High.

The BSE Sensex comprises 30 actively traded large Indian companies. The TRI version includes dividends, and it is the correct comparator for a fund that distributes or reinvests them. A price index understates the benchmark's return.

2. Why do two asset-size figures differ?

The fund house's September 2026 monthly publication reports assets under management of about Rs 8,495.60 crore as at 31 August 2026. The scheme's product page shows Rs 7,972.95 crore as at 30 September 2026.
