CBDT Extends Tax Audit Report Due Date to 21 October 2026 for AY 2026-27: Key Details and Compliance Guidance
Introduction
With barely two days remaining before the original deadline, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) stepped in with a relief announcement that has become increasingly familiar to tax professionals. Through a press release dated 28 September 2026, the CBDT announced an extension of the due date for furnishing the return of income for Assessment Year 2026-27, along with a corresponding extension of the audit report submission deadline. While the announcement provides immediate clarity on the revised dates, several important aspects remain subject to confirmation through a formal order or notification that the CBDT has indicated will be issued separately.
This article breaks down exactly what has been announced, what professionals and assessees should verify once the formal notification is published, and how the available time can be put to productive use.
What the CBDT Has Announced
The press release issued on 28 September 2026 communicates two key changes, each carrying an extension of 21 days:
Revised Dates at a Glance
| Compliance | Original Due Date | Extended Due Date |
|---|---|---|
| Audit Report (Specified Date) | 30 September 2026 | 21 October 2026 |
| Return of Income (S. No. 2 category) | 31 October 2026 | 21 November 2026 |
The extension applies to persons falling under S. No. 2 in the Table below Explanation 2 to sub-section (1) of Section 139 of the Income Tax Act, 1961.
Important: The CBDT has explicitly stated that a formal order or notification will be issued separately to give legal effect to this extension. Until that document is published, the press release remains the primary source, and certain aspects of scope and applicability should be treated as provisional.
What Has Not Changed
Two significant matters remain unaffected by this announcement:
The due date for non-audit returns — The deadline of 31 August 2026 applicable to business and professional assessees not subject to tax audit has not been revisited.
The penalty framework under
Section 271B— The consequence of missing the audit report deadline continues to apply without modification. An assessee who fails to furnish the audit report by 21 October 2026 remains exposed to a penalty equivalent to 0.5% of total sales, turnover, or gross receipts, subject to a ceiling of Rs. 1.5 lakh, unless a reasonable cause can be demonstrated.
Equally important is the structural relationship between the two extended dates — the one-month gap between the audit report deadline and the return filing deadline has been maintained. The sequence of audit report first, followed by the return, remains intact.
