Coal India Limited Posts 12.5% Growth in Coal Supplies During September FY 2026-27
Coal India Limited (CIL), the state-owned mining conglomerate headquartered in Kolkata, has announced a notable uptick in its coal supply figures for September in the fiscal year 2026-27. According to data released by the company on October 1, 2026, total coal supplies reached 61.20 million tonnes (MT), reflecting a 12.5% increase over the 54.40 MT dispatched during the corresponding month of the previous fiscal year.
Power Sector Drives Supply Growth
The power sector continues to remain the single largest offtaker of coal from CIL, and its contribution to this growth is particularly evident. During September FY 2026-27, coal dispatches to power utilities stood at 48.90 MT, recording a growth of 10.63% compared to 44.20 MT supplied in September of the prior year.
This sustained demand from power generators reflects the broader energy consumption pattern in India, where coal-based thermal plants continue to form the backbone of the national grid. The consistent offtake from this segment has acted as a primary engine driving CIL's overall supply performance.
Non-Regulated Sector Also Registers Robust Growth
Beyond the power sector, coal supplies to the non-regulated sector (NRS) — which includes industries such as cement, steel, sponge iron, and other captive consumers — also recorded a healthy rise. The NRS segment witnessed a 19.41% increase in supply during the month, outpacing even the growth seen in the regulated power sector.
